SOS Ottawa Chapter Projects

Over the years, SOS Ottawa members have undertaken various projects.  At present, there are two major projects underway: the Plaque Project and The Twisted Sisters.

2009 season has been a busy year for the Ottawa chapter with several projects underway. We have made great progress on all projects below but still have some work to do.

Check out this section for future projects.

Fred Mercur (underwater plaque)

Back in Jan 2009 Mark Labelle approached Luc Lafontaine (Chapter Chair) with a proposal to produce and install an underwater plaque for the Fred Mercur and made arrangements with the Forces Sub Aqua club to give us a generous donation of 100$ for the project. Please refer to the file below for a sneak preview of the plaque.

Current status:

The plaque has been produced and was presented at the August chapter meeting. Text for the plaque has been submitted by Mark.

Next step will be to build the concrete bloc for the plaque. Mark will make arrangements with his contact (we will try to find the name of the contact) from Cornwall that will donate and build the bloc.

Mark, Frédéric and I will organize a dive for the installation of the underwater plaque.

Members will be invited to help with the installation of the plaque.

The media will be advised and we will be taking pictures of the event.

Lock 22 (new buoy)

COMPLETED

Luc, as the buoy director, has submitted, back in 2008, a request to SOS corporate for a new buoy for the Lock 22. The idea behind the new dive site is to entice dive charters and divers to enjoy sites in the Lost Villages (Dive the Lost Villages) section of the St-Lawrence river where dive site can better withstand the impact of divers to alleviate the pressure over ‘commercialized’ dive sites in the Brockville area. SOS has noticed up to 5 dive charters operators on the Robert Gaskin at the same time on a busy Saturday. SOS corporate has approved and supplied a new buoy for the project.

Wee Hawk (new land plaque)

Gordon Dewis (previous chapter chair) and Brian Prince have initiated a project to produce a land plaque for the Wee-Hawk. In Jan 2009, at a chapter meeting Luc Lafontaine (newly elected chapter chair) was past a grant application for the township of Edwardsburgh/Cardinal. Luc agreed to continue the project and submitted the grant application and the chapter was received a generous grant of 300$ to produce the plaque. Since there were two wrecks in the locks (see presentation for further information) a survey is required to validate the dimensions of the wreck. Nathalie Lasselin (Chapter Chair of SOS Quebec) has come forward to organize the survey of the wreck.

Status:

Since spring 2009 Trista Lauzon has agreed to lend a hand for the project and was able to gather further information via interviews, research at the archives, news articles and various other sources.

At the August chapter meeting Trista provide members with a great presentation on the history of the Weehawk.

We are currently gathering more information to complete the data.

Survey application has been initiated by Nathalie.

Dates for the survey will be provided to members once the application will be accepted.

Eastcliffe Hall (replace missing buoy)

COMPLETED

SOS Ottawa was informed in mid 2008 season that the 45 gallon buoy for the Eastcliff Hall was missing and that the line was potentially damaged due to improper hook-up by a dive charter operator. Luc L. (as buoy director) submitted a request to replace the missing buoy by rebuilding a new buoy. In spring 2009 the new buoy has been re-built (see attached pictures) and a new line was prepared.

Status:

In July, members of SOS Ottawa replaced the broken line and a buoy was installed as a temporary measure as we needed to do further floatability test of the new 45 gallon buoy.

The project is now considered as completed.

Thank-you to all members that have participated:

  • Tom Scott (SOS Thousand Island) for his help to build the new buoy and showing us how to properly splice a rope
  • Frank Malette (Wet Beaver Charters) for helping installing the new buoy and providing us with his boat
  • Christopher Holloway for helping building and installing the buoy
  • Frédéric Tremblay for helping installing the buoy
  • Brian Prince for providing us with construction details
  • Marg Barker for her excellent service at the SOS Ship Stores
  • Luc Lafontaine for building, installing the buoy and coordinating the project
