2008 saw the Ottawa Chapter Committee continue to promote the mission of Save Ontario Shipwrecks.
Outreach was the main form this took, with the chapter being invited back to Heritage Riverfest held at Pinhey’s Point on Labour Day weekend. This year, the festival was expanded to two days from the one it ran on in past years. I gave a presentation about Save Ontario Shipwrecks on Saturday to a group of visitors and Nancy Binnie gave a short presentation on the Sunday. Attendance on the first day seemed a little lower than last year, probably due to a combination of holding the event for two days on the Labour Day weekend. Still, it is a good way to reach people in Ottawa and tell them about the organization.
We were very fortunate to have Luc Lafontaine join the chapter and become the buoy manager in the fall. He is now looking after the various buoys the chapter is responsible for. One of his winter tasks is creating a replacement buoy for the Eastcliff Hall, a large buoy based on a 55-gallon drum that disappeared sometime last summer. He has also proposed placing a new buoy at Lock 22 next year, which the Board agreed to at the November Board Meeting.
Thank you very much to Luc for taking on this responsibility!
As I prepare to retire as chapter president I would like to thank everyone who has participated over the years. Without people like you, the mission of the organization cannot be forwarded. In particular, I would like to thank my fellow executive members for their on-going support.
Respectfully submitted,
Gordon Dewis, SOS Ottawa Chairperson (outgoing)
